GSA Global provides OSINT and digital footprint investigation services using publicly and lawfully available information to support corporate investigations, due diligence, fraud enquiries and other sensitive matters.

Relevant information may exist across corporate records, websites, social media, online identities, historic content and other public sources. The challenge is not simply finding information, but establishing whether it relates to the correct person or organisation, assessing its reliability, understanding its context and determining how much confidence should be placed in it.

Our open-source investigations apply structured research, validation and analysis to turn publicly available information into assessed investigative findings. The work is led by GSA Global’s open-source investigation capability and is reported with clear sourcing, analytical confidence and limitations so that it can be considered alongside other available evidence.

What is an OSINT Investigation?

Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is investigation using information that is publicly and lawfully available: corporate registries and filings, court and insolvency records, media archives, websites and their histories, social media content and imagery. An OSINT investigation is not a search-engine session at scale. It is a structured intelligence process: defining the question, identifying the sources capable of answering it, collecting systematically, validating each finding against others, and reporting what the evidence supports with its gaps and uncertainties stated.

Two boundaries define the practice. GSA does not access private accounts or use unlawfully obtained information; the permitted methods and sources are agreed according to the purpose, applicable law and ethical requirements of the assignment. And we do not overstate attribution: connecting an online identity to a real person is often possible, but the strength of that connection varies, and our reports grade it honestly.

Evidential Capture and Reporting

Open-source findings are only useful if they can be relied on later, when the content may have changed or vanished. Material items are captured with their source and context, dated at the point of capture, and preserved in a form that shows what was found, where and when. Reports state analytical confidence for each finding, established fact, corroborated finding, single-source indication or unresolved possibility, together with alternative explanations where the evidence supports more than one reading, and evidential limits. Whether particular material is admissible in proceedings is a legal question for the client’s advisers; our role is capture and documentation careful enough to support that assessment.

Lawful and Proportionate Investigations

Open-source does not mean anything goes. Every assignment has a defined, legitimate purpose agreed at the outset; enquiries are limited to what that purpose requires; privacy and data-protection obligations shape both collection and reporting; and methods are chosen because they are necessary and proportionate to the question. We decline instructions that lack a legitimate purpose, and we tell clients when the proportionate answer is a narrower scope than they asked for.

Our OSINT Specialists

Ellen Davies, Lead Open-Source Investigator, is the principal expert for this service; her expertise includes individual and corporate due diligence, asset tracing, network analysis and geolocation, developed across UK Government and legal-sector casework. Where a matter requires more than open-source work, the wider firm supports: David Wood for senior oversight on complex or sensitive matters, Howard Nichol where hostile actors or counterintelligence context are in play, and the cyber team where the question moves beyond open-source research into technical systems.

Our OSINT and Digital Footprint Investigations Capabilities

Digital Footprint Investigations

A digital footprint investigation builds the fullest lawful picture of a subject’s online presence: identities and aliases across platforms; current and historical profiles, including earlier versions of content lawfully preserved in public archives; interests, affiliations and activity patterns; relationships and interactions; and how the subject’s presence has developed over time. Clients commission this work on counterparties, litigation opponents, individuals making threats or claims, prospective partners and with appropriate authority their own organisations, to understand what an adversary could find.

Corporate OSINT Investigations

Applied to corporate matters, open-source investigation supports fraud enquiries, insider-risk work, information-leakage matters, supplier and third-party concerns, intellectual-property misuse and misconduct investigations where online activity is evidentially relevant. This capability is embedded across GSA’s corporate investigation and fraud investigation practices rather than sold as an isolated exercise.

Social Media Investigations

Social media evidence is powerful and easily mishandled, and professional practice addresses the risks: context (a post read without its thread, audience or platform culture is easily misread); authenticity (accounts, images and screenshots can be fabricated, and material is assessed before being treated as evidence); dates (timestamps, edits and reposts require care before any timeline is built on them); and identity (the person with the same name is a recurring source of error identity is corroborated, not assumed).

Online Threat and Harm Investigations

We investigate online harassment and abuse, impersonation of individuals and brands, threatening communications and coordinated malicious campaigns, including the identification so far as the evidence lawfully allows of those potentially behind them, and assessment of escalation indicators that inform the client’s protective decisions. A published example: our investigation supporting a leading fashion photographer targeted by email impersonation.

Where a threat is immediate a credible threat of violence, a person at risk now contact the police on 999. We support clients through the aftermath and the enquiries that follow; emergencies belong with the emergency services.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What can an OSINT investigation find?

Corporate structures and interests, litigation and insolvency history, assets and interests identifiable from public records, online identities and their history, relationships and networks, and adverse or reputational material — anything publicly and lawfully available, gathered systematically and validated. What it finds in a given case depends on the footprint the subject has left.

Is OSINT legal?

Investigating publicly available information for a legitimate purpose, in compliance with privacy and data-protection law, is lawful. Legality depends on purpose, method and use as well as source, which is why every assignment begins with a defined legitimate purpose and a proportionality assessment.

Can you access private social-media accounts?

No. GSA does not access private accounts or use unlawfully obtained information. The permitted methods and sources are agreed according to the purpose, applicable law and ethical requirements of the assignment.

Can you identify an anonymous account?

Sometimes, through lawful analysis of content, connections, patterns and imagery and sometimes not. Where identification is possible, we state the strength of the attribution honestly rather than presenting a probable link as a certainty.

Can online evidence be used in legal proceedings?

It frequently is, and careful capture and documentation give it the best chance. Whether particular material is admissible is a legal question for your advisers; we do not guarantee admissibility.

What does an OSINT report contain?

The question addressed, sources and methodology, findings with confidence levels, supporting captures referenced and preserved, alternative explanations where relevant, gaps and limitations, and recommended further enquiries where useful.
